A versatile plant that likes to grow in chalky soils near rivers, it is also known as a roadkeeper. It is known for its nutritional value as fodder, but also as a vegetable (chicory) and the roasted root as a coffee substitute. Medicinally, the effects of this plant are blood purification, liver repair, diuretic, kidney and spleen.

The plant also contains insulin, which has a beneficial effect on intestinal flora and blood sugar levels.

Sowing

Sowing can be done in various ways, for example if you have a meadow where animals are often kept, mark the corners or sow along the edges and place a ribbon there.

In due course, you hand it over to the animals when they have had plenty of time to sow.

If the animals graze under the existing fence, you can use these areas, sowing some of the seed out of reach of the animals, so that it can develop fully and come back the following year.

Once it has sown or before, you can also mow it with the long grass present in the area and offer it to the animals.

Make sure that the animals feed on it selectively, otherwise reduce the quantities. Make sure their feeding behaviour calms down before offering them more.

Fertilise

Most grasses like soil that contains enough metals and mineral trace elements.
