More and more riders have a ‘care horse’ in their stable. Instead of having fun together, they are confronted with the many health problems of their four-legged friends, who suffer from various ‘diseases of civilisation’ or other health problems. These problems range from reduced performance and diffuse locomotor symptoms to serious illnesses such as sweet-itch or laminitis. Those examining these problems always come back to the feed, which in many stables is still woefully inadequate for the species. Various supplementary feeds then have to camouflage the symptoms caused by a basic diet not adapted to the horse and its needs, and the problems are thus shifted from one organ system to another, without the horse being in good health in the long term. 

 
Unfortunately, the consequences of a poor diet are not usually visible immediately, but often only after a delay of several months or years. The horse's metabolism first tries to replace processes that are no longer working optimally with others. But this tires them out and the metabolism has to find a new ‘distraction’ to keep the body alive. External symptoms only appear when the metabolism has exhausted all possibilities of responding to system failures by other means. The time that elapses between the moment when the first signs appear and the moment when the symptoms become visible varies from one horse to another. For example, one horse may still tolerate food very well, while another has long suffered from cramps and a third has watery faeces.
