The saying 'having the stomach of a horse', often attributed to people with strong stomachs, has long since been disproved. We now know that although horses cannot vomit for anatomical reasons, they nevertheless have extremely sensitive stomachs. As a result, they often react to a hay-based diet with prolonged (forced) pauses between hay portions with inflammation in the anterior part of the stomach. Stress also 'hits' the horse's stomach and can lead to inflammation or even - in the long term - gastric ulcers, often in the region of the stomach outlet.
Of course, not all horses are created equal: some have stomachs that are much more sensitive to disturbance than others.
