What is turmeric?
Turmeric is also known as turmeric or turmeric saffron. Its Latin name is Curcuma longa. The plant is native to India and South-East Asia. It has been revered there for 5,000 years. It has been used for just as long in traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda. In Europe, it was first known as a cooking spice. Over the last 50 years or so, the medicinal properties of turmeric have also been explored.
How is turmeric obtained?
Turmeric is a plant in the ginger family. Yellow turmeric is obtained from its rhizome by drying and pulverising. Curcumin, a substance traditionally extracted from the plant, is used not only as a flavour enhancer but also as a yellow colouring agent, particularly for colouring food.
