Tick-borne diseases such as piroplasmosis and/or Lyme occur when a horse is bitten by a tick carrying a pathogenic bacterium. For piroplasmosis, the bacteria involved are Babesia caballi or Theileria equi, and for Lyme disease, Borrelia. These bacteria spread rapidly through the horse's blood and tissues. Detecting piroplasmosis and Lyme disease is not easy, as their clinical signs are non-specific. However, symptoms such as anaemia, fever, uveitis, joint stiffness, chronic weight loss and intermittent or sudden lameness should prompt a check for possible contamination.
Conventional treatment consists of antibiotic therapy for Lyme disease and the use of piroplasmicide for piroplasmosis. Regrettably, it is currently almost impossible to cure a horse infected with Theileria equi with a piroplasmicide, and difficult to eliminate Borrelia completely with antibiotics. Borrelia has the ability to encyst itself in the same way as worms, and to remain immune to antibiotics.
To support affected horses, it's vital to boost their resistance to the damage caused by bacteria: eliminate toxins, boost the immune system, treat the gastrointestinal tract and seed the microbiota.
