Pain linked to the hormonal cycles of mares is often observed but rarely taken into account. From an anatomical point of view, the left ovary is higher than the right, so in the event of congestion or inflammation, stiffness or even lameness of the left hind leg is a recurrent feature of the clinical picture.
The pituitary gland, located at the base of the skull, produces two distinct hormones: follicle-stimulating and luteinising. As spring approaches, the pituitary gland is stimulated by the increase in daylight, which encourages the production of follicle-stimulating hormone, released into the bloodstream. This allows a follicle containing an egg to grow. The growing follicle produces oestrogen, which in turn is released into the bloodstream.
The emotional instability and pain inherent in these cycles can be very debilitating for mares and sometimes lead to chronic fatigue.
This is why support is needed:
-Reduce inflammation
-Activate circulation
-Relieve the pressure on the liver that causes painful stasis
-Regulate hormonal activity
-Soothe the mood
