We are all used to hanging a rock of salt in the stable or the paddock. But let's say you expand that range a bit! Then your horse can choose what he needs on a daily basis. This immediately provides an advantage. The mineral buffet stimulates search behavior. Traditionally (in the wild), horses have a habit of looking for certain ingredients in their diet. The ease with which certain minerals could be found differed depending on the living environment. You can imagine that the horses of the coast had no problem finding salt; in the forest, they had no trouble finding forest soil (hummus) containing many types of minerals.

Until then, there isn't much more to find (or look for) in the home environment. It is usually very clear to the horses where they are given hay, water and feed. By creating a mineral buffet, you can again stimulate natural seeking behavior. Most horses like it a lot.

How does the mineral buffet work? In fact, it is very simple. Just like licking, you hang all kinds of containers in the barn or paddock and fill them with various ingredients. A good example of a basic range:

* 1 container of Celtic sea salt

* 1 container with water and a few spoons  by Veendrenk

* 1 Himalayan lick (can also be several different colors).

Of course, you can expand the range with other types of products. Think mother earth (clay), algae, diatomaceous earth, and EM Multi Task. Always fill the empty container.

You will see that the preference changes from time to time as needed. For example, seasonal change, stress, hormones, changes in hay, parasites, growth and physical exertion can all affect need. Sometimes some types are left untouched for weeks or months and then eaten every day. Fortunately, it doesn't matter, because almost all products have an infinite lifespan.

TIP! Use little of any type. This has two advantages. You need to fill the trays more often to keep the ingredients fresh. This is important for algae, for example, because they oxidize on contact with oxygen. In addition, your horse can never eat too much of it at one time.

Important: It is important that the horse always has access to 1 watering point through which nothing is mixed.

To stimulate search behavior optimally, you can get very creative. You can move the bins each time or you can change the contents. Horses would prefer to eat these products from the ground, as it most closely resembles how things would be in nature. That is why I would recommend hanging the containers low. From experience, I can also recommend hanging them in a covered place. Otherwise, you are lucky that the rain will always wash away everything.

Hoe gemakkelijk bepaalde mineralen vindbaar waren verschilde per leefomgeving. I kan I voorstellen dat paarden aan de kust geen probleem hadden met het vinden van zout; in het bos hadden ze geen moeite met het vinden van bosgrond (hummus) die vele soorten mineralen bevat.

Inmiddels is er binnen de gedomesticeerde omgeving niet veel meer te vinden (of te zoeken). Het is over het algemeen heel duidelijk voor paarden waar ze het hooi, water en voer opgediend krijgen. Door een mineralenbuffet aan te leggen, kun je het natuurlijk zoekgedrag weer wat stimulen. De meeste paarden kunnen dat zeer waarderen.

Hoe werkt het mineralenbuffet?

Eigenlijk is het heel simpel. Net als of liksteen, hang I go on bakjes op in of stal of paddock in die vul I put various ingrediënten. Een goed voorbeeld van een basisassortment:

• 1 bak met Keltisch zeezout
• 1 bak met water en een paar scheppen Veendrenk
• 1 Himalaya liksteen (mag ook meerdere van verschillende kleuren).

Uiteraard kun je het assortiment uitbreiden met andere soorten producten. Denk aan  moeder aarde,  zeewier,  diatomess  in  Multi Task. Vul telkens de bak aan die leeg is. Zo zal je zien dat van tijd tot tijd de voorkeur verandert naar behoefte. Bijvoorbeeld seizoenswisseling, stress, hormonen, verandering van hooi, parasieten, groei en fysieke inspanning kunnen Allemaal op de behoefte van invloed zijn. Soms worden bepaalde soorten weken tot maanden niet aangeraakt om vervolgens weer iedere dag te worden leeggegeten. Dat geeft gelukkig niet, want bijna alle producten zijn oneindig houdbaar.

Tip!  Gebruik van elke soort maar weinig. Dat geeft twee voordelen. I moet from bakken vaker bijvullen waardoor from ingrediënten to blijven. Bij zeewier is dit bijvoorbeeld belangrijk, want dat oxideert in aanraking met zuurstof. Daarnaast kan je paard er zo nooit te veel van eten in één keer.

Belangrijk  hierbij is dat het paard altijd toegang heeft tot 1 drinkpunt waar niets doorheen is gemengd.

Om het zoekgedrag optimaal te stimulateen kun je heel creatief worden. I kunt de bakken telkens verplaatsen of je kunt de inhoud wisselen. Er wordt gezegd dat paarden het liefste vanaf de grond deze producten eten, omdat dit het meest vergelijkbaar is met hoe het in het wild zou gaan. Daarom zou ik aanraden from bakjes laag op te hangen. Uit ervaring kan ik ook aanraden om ze op een overdekte plaats te hangen. Anders heb je kans dat de regen telkens alles wegspoelt.
