 What is OKAPI Weidemineral Balance?

Weidemineral Balance is a granulated mineral feed (G) for horses, without added vitamins, which is suitable for feeding adult horses throughout the year living in species-appropriate conditions and on soil of average nutritional quality. It provides a balanced mineral intake without the risk of over-vitaminisation, as many vitamins are either produced by the horse itself or absorbed in sufficient quantities from its basic diet.

For example:

 Vitamin D and vitamin C are produced by the horse itself. 

 B vitamins and vitamin K are absorbed by the intestinal flora.

 Vitamin A and vitamin E are present in sufficient quantities in pasture grass.

Mineral Pur G is ideal for horses that already receive all the necessary vitamins in their basic feed. It guarantees an essential mineral supply without the risk of vitamin overdose. The product can also be offered in the form of a lick block, which allows for easy and permanent availability of the feed.

 Is OKAPI Weidemineral Balance suitable for my horse?

Mineral Pur G is ideal for adult horses kept in species-appropriate conditions. This mineral feed does not contain any added vitamins, as a horse fed a balanced diet does not usually need additional vitamins. Nutrients are absorbed either through the body's own synthesis, through the intestinal flora, or through the basic feed, which often already provides sufficient amounts of vitamins such as A and E. Mineral Pur G prevents excessive vitamin intake.

For horses whose basic feed is low in calcium, such as hay or grass from pastures on sandy or marshy soils, it is advisable to switch to Weidemineral G (S), which is also vitamin-free but adapted to the soil quality. For horses that do not have access to pasture, such as those that are overweight or have special needs, it is recommended to use a vitamin-enriched mineral feed, such as Mineral Concentrate G (S).

Can I combine OKAPI Weidemineral Balance with other products?

OKAPI Weidemineral Balance can generally be combined with other feeds. It is important to keep in mind the overall composition of the ration to ensure that the horse's nutritional needs are optimally met. With regard to the mineral intake of horses, care should be taken not to give mineral feeds and mineral monopreparations, such as Zinc Chelate Plus or Sulphur Plus, in the same meal. Many minerals are regulated in the body in relation to each other, and their simultaneous absorption can impair metabolism. For example, a supplementary intake of zinc chelate cannot be optimally absorbed if copper from the mineral feed is absorbed at the same time. Ideally, one of the feeds should be given in the morning and the other in the evening. If this is not possible for logistical reasons, an interval of at least two hours between meals should be observed. The product Prodic should also be given separately from mineral feeds, as it can bind minerals in the intestine, leading to their excretion in the faeces and thus reducing nutrient absorption.

How long should I give OKAPI Weidemineral Balance to my horse?

Mineral feed must be tailored to the individual needs of the horse. When a horse needs minerals, it usually consumes mineral feed itself. As soon as its needs are met, it refuses this feed. It is therefore recommended not to give mineral supplements on a permanent basis, but rather in the form of "mineral treatments" to support the natural metabolism. This form of intermittent administration corresponds to the mineral intake of wild horses, which in their natural environment do not have permanent access to all minerals. Instead, they replenish their body's reserves during periods of abundance in order to use them during phases of lower availability.

This feeding schedule promotes the body's ability to effectively regulate its mineral reserves and prevents permanent excess, which is particularly common when administering organic mineral feed. Mineral feed should therefore only be given as long as the horse consumes it according to its needs. However, if a horse constantly demands mineral feed over long periods of time, this may indicate metabolic disorders that need to be treated. How should OKAPI Weidemineral Balance be administered?

Mineral feed should ideally be given as needed. To do this, pour a daily ration into a bowl and offer it to the horse. If the horse needs minerals, it will consume the daily dose. If its needs are met, it will refuse the feed, indicating that its body's reserves are well stocked. In this case, the bowl can be kept in the stable cupboard, tightly closed, so that the mineral feed can be offered again after 2 to 4 weeks. It is also possible to provide lick blocks for mineral intake, as these are only used as needed.

Healthy horses with a reliable instinct generally consume the amount of minerals they need and ignore the rest. However, if the horse does not consume minerals for a long period of time, it may be advisable to mix small doses into the main feed for a while, for example a handful of soaked hay or sainfoin pellets, in order to replenish mineral reserves. Total rejection of mineral feed is more common in horses that have problems regulating their natural mineral balance due to metabolic disorders, or in very fussy horses that first need to get used to the taste.

How do I calculate the appropriate dosage for my horse?

To calculate the appropriate dose of OKAPI Weidemineral Balance, you can follow these steps:

Determine the horse's weight: the horse's weight can be determined either by weighing it, measuring it with a tape measure, or using applications such as the BCI application from our partner Sanoanimal (available free of charge on Google Play and the Apple Store).

Follow the feeding recommendations for OKAPI Mineral Pur G: The general recommendation for OKAPI Mineral Pur G refers to a horse weighing 600 kg. The recommended daily amount is 2 to 3 measuring spoons (1 measuring spoon = 25 g), which corresponds to a total of 50 g to 75 g per day.

Adjust the dose: if the horse weighs 300 kg, for example, the dose should be adjusted accordingly.

The calculation is then as follows: 50 g / 600 kg × 300 kg = 25 g per day.

- 3 kg is sufficient for approximately 2 months - 10 kg is sufficient for approximately 6 months - 25 kg is sufficient for several horses
