What is OKAPI Four Season Feeding?

Four Season Herbs are special herbal blends that have been developed to provide horses with a rich herbal diet, adapted to the season. These blends are fed for two months at a time and are designed to meet the specific needs of horses in different seasons. The short feeding period avoids the effects of habituation while ensuring a greater variety of herbs, in line with the natural diet of horses.

Four Seasons Herbs are an excellent support for the metabolism and offer a healthy, grain-free alternative to traditional concentrated foods. They consist exclusively of pure herbs and contain no cereals, fruit, vegetables or additives such as preservatives or essential oils. This makes them particularly suitable for light horses that don't need additional concentrated feed, but still need something in their feed trough during the feeding period or after riding.

These highly varied herbal mixes accompany and support the horse's metabolism according to the season. However, they are not designed to provide therapeutic support for metabolic problems. For such specific needs, OKAPI offers other herbal blends that are specifically adapted to such problems.

Is Four Seasons coat change feed suitable for my horse?

This makes them particularly well tolerated, even by horses on a light diet who don't need concentrated feed.

  • OKAPI four-season herbs should be given for two months at a time, depending on your horse's specific needs in each season. Each blend is designed to promote your horse's well-being throughout the year. Here is a recommended feeding strategy for the six different varieties:

OKAPI 4 Season Feed Spring Sensations

(February and March): this mix supports your horse during the change of coat from winter to spring, when the metabolism is particularly stressed.

OKAPI 4-season feed Start of grazing

(April and May): Ideal for the period when nature wakes up and your horse benefits from the growing vitality of spring.

OKAPI 4 Season Feed Summer grass (June and July)

This mix helps your horse during the transition to fresh pasture and supports the metabolism during the transition phase.

OKAPI 4 Seasonal Coat Change (August and September)

Perfect for the hot summer months, to boost your horse's vitality during this intense period.

OKAPI 4 Season Feed Autumn Days (October and November)

Supports your horse during the cold, wet autumn months when temperatures drop and pastures become poorer.

OKAPI 4-season winter pasture feed (December and January): Specially designed for the cold winter months, it supports your horse during the period when grass is scarce and provides the necessary nutrients.

By feeding these six varieties in rotation throughout the year, your horse benefits from the right seasonal support, avoiding the effects of habituation and promoting his health and vitality in a natural way.

How do I feed OKAPI 4 Seasons?

Four Seasons food can be fed dry or slightly moistened. For dry feeding, it is mixed directly with concentrated fodder or sprinkled on hay. For wet feeding, the food is mixed with a little water and left to swell for a few minutes to make it easier to accept, especially for sensitive horses.

How do I calculate the right dosage for my horse?

To calculate the appropriate dose of Four Seasons feed, follow these steps:

    1. Determine the horse's weight: The horse's weight can be determined using a scale, a tape measure or appropriate applications such as the BCI app from our partner Sanoanimal (available free on Google Play and Apple Store).

    2) Follow the dietary recommendations for the Four Seasons food. The general recommendation for four-season feed refers to a 600 kg horse: - Approximately 150 g of four-season feed per day.

    3. Adjust the dose: if the horse weighs 300 kg, for example, the dose should be halved accordingly. If the horse weighs 450 kg, the dose is calculated according to the following formula: 150 g / 600 kg * 450 kg = 112.5 g.

This calculation method can be used for each weight category to determine the appropriate quantity of four-season feed.
