Seaweed meal (Ascophyllum nodosum, vesicular kelp) is a high-quality natural product that comes from the sea and is therefore rich in minerals, trace elements and micro-nutrients. Thanks to their naturally high iodine content, seaweed are ideal for compensating for iodine deficiency in horses. However, due to its high iodine content, seaweed meal should only be fed as a supplement to a normal mineral feed, to avoid any mineral imbalance, as horses are very sensitive to excessive intake of this trace element.
Is seaweed meal suitable for my horse?
In our experience, seaweed can be used to supplement the basic mineral intake of Icelanders, as they often seem to have an increased need for the micro-elements contained in seaweed. These are minerals required by the metabolism in even smaller quantities than trace elements. As the horse's requirements for these micro-elements are very low, they do not need to be added to the normal mineral diet, unlike trace elements. If there is a need in this area, seaweed can be used. In addition, seaweed is recommended for horses that throw themselves greedily at mineral feed or lickstones, literally eat salty lickstones or tend to eat earth. Among other problems, these behaviours may conceal a mineral imbalance. If the behaviour does not normalise after four weeks of seaweed administration, we recommend consulting a qualified therapist, for example via our partner Sanoanimal.
