The natural mineral and trace element supplement
2,500g are enough for about 3 - 4 weeks.
OKAPI seaweed fine 2.5kg
Seaweed meal (Ascophyllum nodosum, vesicular kelp) is a high-quality natural product that comes from the sea and is therefore rich in minerals, trace elements and micro-nutrients. Thanks to their naturally high iodine content, seaweed are ideal for compensating for iodine deficiency in horses. However, due to its high iodine content, seaweed meal should only be fed as a supplement to a normal mineral feed, to avoid any mineral imbalance, as horses are very sensitive to excessive intake of this trace element.
Is seaweed meal suitable for my horse?
In our experience, seaweed can be used to supplement the basic mineral intake of Icelanders, as they often seem to have an increased need for the micro-elements contained in seaweed. These are minerals required by the metabolism in even smaller quantities than trace elements. As the horse's requirements for these micro-elements are very low, they do not need to be added to the normal mineral diet, unlike trace elements. If there is a need in this area, seaweed can be used. In addition, seaweed is recommended for horses that throw themselves greedily at mineral feed or lickstones, literally eat salty lickstones or tend to eat earth. Among other problems, these behaviours may conceal a mineral imbalance. If the behaviour does not normalise after four weeks of seaweed administration, we recommend consulting a qualified therapist, for example via our partner Sanoanimal.
Can I combine seaweed meal with other products?
OKAPI seaweed meal can be combined with other products.
How long should I feed OKAPI seaweed meal?
We recommend giving Icelanders seaweed regularly over a period of two to four weeks.
How do I feed OKAPI seaweed meal?
It is not necessary to mix OKAPI seaweed meal with other feeds. Horses will happily take it pure if necessary and leave it when their needs are sufficiently covered, in the same way as with the mineral feeds in our range. To do this, simply pour a daily ration into a bowl and offer it to the horse. As OKAPI seaweed meal is not mixed with molasses or other flavour enhancers, but is a purely natural product, horses taste what they eat.
How do I calculate the right dosage for my horse?
To calculate the appropriate dose of OKAPI seaweed meal, follow these steps:
Determine the horse's weight: The horse's weight can be determined either by weighing it, measuring it with a tape measure or using applications such as the BCI application from our partner Sanoanimal (available free of charge on Google Play and Apple Store):
Comply with feed recommendations: The general recommendations for OKAPI products refer to a 600 kg horse.
The recommended daily amount is 5-10 ml (1 scoop = 16 g).
Adapt the dose: if the horse weighs 300 kg, for example, the dose should be adapted accordingly. The calculation is as follows: daily dose (160 g) / 600 kg × weight of horse (300 kg) = daily ration (80 g).
This calculation method is used to determine the appropriate quantity.
OKAPI seaweed meal contains: seaweed (Ascophyllum nodosum)
Iodine content: 1072 ppm
Analytical constituents and content: Crude ash: 27.80%.
The seaweed used in our seaweed meal is harvested off Alaska or Iceland, depending on the season and volcanic activity, then gently dried and ground. Then, as with our other raw materials, they are of course subjected to appropriate residue controls to ensure that our seaweed does not contain harmful residues such as high levels of heavy metals.
