We have changed or had to change the recipe for two reasons:
Legislation on the maximum permitted quantities of trace elements in animal feed has changed. We have therefore had to reduce the quantities contained. We use the maximum quantities authorised by law for copper and zinc chelate. If we were to dose more, we would be in conflict with the law and the authorities in charge of animal feed, so it was with a heavy heart that we decided to modify the recipe.
The chelates have also changed. The chelates used now are even more bio-available and at the same time have a 'less dry' taste than those used previously - so they're also more readily accepted than the old variant, and we're trying to compensate for some of the reduced quantity by making them even more bio-available.
In addition, new scientific studies show that vitamin D3 supplementation is contraindicated in young animals, as it increases the risk of equatorial lameness, radiating leg lameness ('hoof roll') and osteochondrosis dissecans ('chips'). Admittedly, the studies were not carried out on pregnant mares, but on young horses (aged 6 months and over), but vitamin D is transmitted via the transplant route and we want to avoid foals being overdosed in the womb and possibly developing musculoskeletal lesions later on. Even if this has not been scientifically proven, we don't want to take any risks.
With our food, we strive not only to meet the (constantly changing) legal requirements, but also to be at the cutting edge of research and to adapt our recipes accordingly. The results obtained so far from breeders show that our new formula is just as effective as the old one.
Please note that Pränat Z & K does not replace a mineral feed, but is only intended as a supplementary feed for brood mares during the last two months of gestation, so that both mare and foal benefit from an optimal supply of zinc and copper, which are often deficient during this period.
As a general mineral supplement for brood mares, breeding horses and remounts, we recommend our tried-and-tested Junior-Mineral G, which we now also have in our range in the form of a lick tray (ideal for paddocks, pastures and open stables).
Complementary feed for horses. Store in a cool, dry place.
