How long should I feed OKAPI Mountain Salt?

Salt should always be available to horses, which is why salt stones are the most appropriate supply. Most horses prefer natural salt stones. If horses use OKAPI Mountain Core too much because they are bored or stressed, it should only be offered every day for a limited time, for example during grooming.

How do I feed OKAPI Mountain Salt?

Mountain Salt can be made freely available, for example in the shelter of the open stable or in a dry corner of the stall. If horses lick the salt stone excessively, it may be due to boredom, a lack of roughage or a mineral imbalance.

The latter is often the result of metabolic problems or a poorly balanced mineral diet. In such cases, we strongly recommend removing the salt stone from the stable and offering it only temporarily, for example at the grooming area.

Our mountain cores come from the Alpine region. This salt has been under the mountain for 10 million years.

What is OKAPI mountain saltlick?

Our mountain core is 99.8% sodium chloride, in other words salt. It is extracted from salt deposits in the Alps and we offer it as a natural lickstone, exactly as it comes from the mountains.

The content of other minerals in (natural) lickstones is negligible (0.2%), as they are only present in trace amounts. It makes no difference where the salt comes from, for example if you use Himalayan salt (which, incidentally, comes from Pakistan and is not mined in the Himalayas) or if, as here, the salt comes from a regional operation. In the case of salt mined in the region, the wages and working conditions of the workers are naturally much better. What's more, this salt does not have to be transported at great expense to the other side of the world, which considerably reduces the ecological footprint.

Is mountain salt suitable for my horse?

OKAPI Bergkern is suitable for adult horses of all ages and breeds.  Foals are very curious and are not yet sure of their instincts.

This is why it is essential to avoid placing lickstones or mineral cups in the foal's stable or placing them in such a way that the foal cannot reach them - bearing in mind that foals can sometimes be very creative in trying to get to that incredibly interesting stone or cup!

As they are not yet sure of their instincts, they often ingest too many minerals, which can lead to serious diarrhoea that can quickly become life-threatening.
