Bitter herbs are a natural part of a horse’s daily diet. At least, that used to be the case. Horses used to enjoy eating them in small quantities. But nowadays, they are absent from most pastures. Today, many horses are not offered a single one of these bitter herbs, leading to inflammation of the mucous membranes, imbalances in the gut flora, colic, anal discharge and diarrhoea.
Bitter herbs stimulate the production of digestive juices, without which proper digestion is impossible. In addition to stimulating digestive secretions, bitter herbs also help to stabilise the desired gut flora. This is the most important factor for the absorption of nutrients and the production of vital vitamins, such as vitamins B6, B12 and K.
