Slippery Elm contains a polysaccharide that turns into a gel when mixed with water. The mucilage comes from the inner bark of the tree and is slightly slippery and viscous, hence the name "Slippery Elm". Slippery Elm powder is an excellent poultice due to its astringent properties and can be used topically as a safe and effective natural poultice for animals.
